Concierge is derived from a French word (comte des cierges) meaning “the keeper of the candle”. Their role was to manage the workers and ensure that the guests of nobility were well served. Candlelight being the only source of light within the vast castles, the concierge was required to ensure the flames were always lit. The concierge was so trusted that nobility promoted them to “the keeper of the Keys”. Every lock and key of the castle was the responsibility of the concierge.
