2019 is already here

Wow. I’m not sure if I’ve never noticed this before or there really has been a shift this year. I am booking events, meetings and catch ups for clients in January and February 2019 and nothing for 2018. It seems everyone has the opinion 2018 is finished, now we’re looking ahead four months!!

Slow down people. Let’s really enjoy Christmas this year. Last year I posted a list of 25 things things to do for each day of December leading up to Christmas. It was so good that I’m not even going to write another list, make sure you check it out here. Our family achieved most things on the list and really enjoyed the challenge (number 1 was the hardest – he he). We’ve also decided this year to put the tree up early (Gasp, I hear). We are not home for Christmas this year, but the girls still enjoy decorating the house. So we’ll just bring it forward by a week or maybe two.

To cloud or not to cloud

A topic that we’ve been asked about quite a bit recently is whether to store files in the cloud or not. So, I’ve put together a list of do’s, don’ts and suggestions that we’ve come across.

  • How important is the information you are storing? If you lost it all today, how would you get it back? This question also relates to email usage via cloud based applications.
  • Always have a second, third or even fourth backup even if you are using the cloud.
  • Do you need to share information with employees, clients or any groups of people? Cloud storage can be very handy if you need to share documents, emails, basically any information. The best part about the sharing tools is that you can restrict access down to individual files.
  • How much storage does your account provider supply? There is a big difference between providers. These questions will also come up based on what your storing. If you’re storing large files, such as videos, animation, raw files, etc, this will use more storage and it may be worth looking at paid options. However, if you’re only storing word documents, emails and jpg files you will find that free options will probably be enough.
  • Keep everything filed. Cloud storage may be the best thing that has ever happened to you but if you don’t use folders, it can end up in a very stressful, overwhelming mess. Think of the folders in your cloud storage as you would a filing cabinet.

While we’re very careful with what we place into cloud storage, we also love it. It’s a way that we can share files with our clients and vice versa and to be honest, one of my favourite cloud storage options is business cards. I get an absolute thrill when we have uploaded all of a client’s business cards that they’ve accumulated and filed them into their folders. There is nothing better than opening an app to find that person you can’t quite remember.

Getting back into the swing of things.

So while I had all the best intentions of writing my own newsletter while we were away, I got caught up in family holiday mode and just never got around to it. Lesson learnt, next time I’m on leave I will be leaving the newsletter in the capable hands of my marketing girl. However, the holiday was much needed and more amazing than I could have imagined.

I didn’t quite make it to silicon valley to have a photo outside the Google sign, but we did get to Boeing. What an inspirational place to visit. Our travels took us from Ensanada in Mexico right through to Seattle with diversions to the Grand Canyon and of course Vegas. 14 hotel rooms, 10 hire cars, train travel, planes, cruises and even horse rides were all part of the experience that left us completely exhausted but definitely wanting to head back for more and memories that will last a lifetime.

So since I’ve been back there has been some interesting requests come through from clients along with our regular ongoing jobs. Some of the more interesting jobs that we’ve been able to achieve over the past few weeks are:

  • Uploading and sorting business cards into Google Drive
  • Liaising with interstate nurseries for plant deliveries
  • Comparing prices between interstate and local dealerships for vehicle maintenance work required
  • Compiled information required for a travel insurance claim
  • Produced a report based on local census data for research into the purchase of a new business

Some of the ongoing work that we do regularly are:

  • Pulling together receipts and information required for BAS and End of Year Tax Returns
  • Email Management
  • Diary Management

Over the next month, we are going to be pulling together some free workshops to help people get started in getting organised. Sometimes, its’ just knowing where to start and having a game plan in place that can give you direction and allow you to feel like the you’re getting on top of things. The first few workshops will be run in person to test the waters, then we’ll attempt some online options.
